The acronym FITNESS simply stands for “frequency, balance and timing.” These three concepts can be summed up in the acronym F-E-R-I-E: Frequency – exercises should be done regularly, exercises should be varied and intense, and timing – the order in which the exercises should be done is important. In fitness circles this is often referred to as the “Pace” element. In our fitness circles, Fitness is often described as the quality of your life, your ability to get and stay motivated to reach your fitness goals. Let’s take a closer look at the meaning of Fitness.
Fitness is a condition of physical health and well being and, more importantly, the ability to do various parts of physical activities, jobs and sports. Fitness is generally attained through regular physical activity, proper nutrition and adequate rest. For example, while walking or running, you will experience both cardio and strength benefits. A proper diet can go a long way toward creating a healthy lifestyle that meets your needs while also allowing you to reap the benefits of the many nutrients that are readily available. A strong and muscular body is also key to achieving a healthy fitness level.
Fitness incorporates several factors. When we refer to it as a quality of life, we are usually speaking about fitness to a point that includes mental and emotional wellness. Fitness has several contributing factors that can affect our performance in various activities. Some of these factors include stamina, agility, power, flexibility, endurance, skill-related components, injury resistance, muscle mass and size, muscle responsiveness, and reaction time. The quality of our performance can be improved through the combination of any or all of the elements of FITNESS.
The most popular form of physical activity that improves fitness levels is swimming. Swimming is among the least intense activities of all and requires minimal training. Swimming can benefit people of all ages and fitness levels. This low-intensity sport can be done without exhausting muscles and without impact on joints as is common with other forms of exercise.
Another component of FITNESS is muscular endurance. Endurance is based on muscle power, which is increased through the contraction of muscles. Muscles are gradually strained as they contract and then relax, resulting in tiny tears, but when the fibers are restored to their resting state they become stronger and longer lasting. As the muscle fibers heal this leads to muscle gains in the overall strength and power components of FITNESS.
The goal of any form of fitness program is to increase the body’s ability to function while providing an avenue for participation in fun, creative and rewarding recreational activities. The combination of a solid dietary plan and an effective training program yields the best results. In the case of working definition, building muscle strength and mass is the goal and the use of professional advice should be pursued where necessary. An adequate amount of sleep each night is also important. A reasonable fitness program using traditional methods, as well as the more advanced FITNESS approaches described above, will produce the results you are looking for.
